"South Lake Presbyterian Church is called to join God in His work by faithfully pointing to the Lord Jesus Christ, by strengthening families, by nurturing children and youth in the Christian faith, by reaching out to the poor, and by caring for the weak."
The statement above was adopted by our Session in 2001 to focus us on changing lives through Christ throughout our church and community. It is your gifts that make this possible. Tithes and offerings enable us to be the body of Christ in the world today, and to continue actively serving God and serving others by sharing and showing God's love.
Questions and Answers about giving and online giving
Why is giving important?
The Bible has much to say about wisdom and finances, with 2,300 verses that tell us to be generous and good stewards of our resources. Jesus taught generosity and sacrifice. He told his followers that they were to serve God and not wealth, and in the parable of the talents he taught that God will hold us each accountable for what we do with all our earthly possessions. What we give to God is a reflection of our faith and our gratitude to God.
How much should I give?
Many people follow the Biblical guideline of giving a tithe, or the first ten percent of what we earn, to God and the church’s work. For some, giving one tenth is challenging. For others, it is a starting point, and their giving far exceeds ten percent. The important thing is that you start somewhere, that your giving reflects an appropriate offering and sacrifice to God given your income, and that your offerings express both your desire to serve the Lord and your investment in God’s work.
Begin by determining what percentage of your income you are giving to God. If you are not yet tithing, consider taking a step toward tithing. For example, if you now give three percent of your income, consider increasing your gift to four percent, and then keep adding one percent each year until you reach the tithing goal.
Our prayer is that everyone will grow in his or her faith through giving financially to the ministries of the church and experience the joy and blessings that come from financial generosity.
